Deep Forest: Deep in the Jungle News

IMAGE CONCERTS COME TO A CLOSE

The last of the "Image" concerts was last Friday (6/1/01), in Tokyo Japan. Deep Forest performed at all eight concerts, and although they were just one of numerous groups performing at the concerts, Deep Forest contributed a lot to the line up.

Deep Forest's sound was not as complicated as their regular live performances in past years, there were less musicians involded in the songs, and there was more of a pop sound to their music. Songs were performed by Michel Sanchez, Eric Mouquet, Gino Ceccarelli, and Beverly Jo Scott, who is a new face to the Deep Forest group. Beverly Jo Scott is an Alabama-born singer with a very soulful voice. Scott sang the main vocals of "Sweet Lullaby", creating a very different sound from the original song. The "Sweet Lullaby started with a piano introduction by Michel and Scott's vocals, and led into a brilliantly decorated panflute sound.

"Freedom Cry" was performed very closely to the album version, with little variation. In "Magic in The Air," Eric played the keyboard and vocorder, with Fumiaki Miyamoto on oboe. Fumiaki Miyamoto talked a little about the recording of "Magic in The Air". "It was fun! Eric lives in a chateau (large country house) and its rooms are coodinated in single colors; green, black, and pink. Eric is a good cook and has a telescope in the garden. His studio was converted from an onstead (single farmhouse). And more."

Besides "Sweet Lullaby" and "Freedom Cry", Gino and Beverly sang backup chorus in Taro Hakase's "Etupirka". Eric and Michel also played keyboard for Taro's "Jounetsutairku". Taro Hakase himself is a zealous Deep Forest fan and perhaps something may evolve from this encounter.
