What
is Deep Forest? |
|
| |
|
Deep
Forest is a French music duo made up by Eric Mouquet and Michel
Sanchez. The two musicians mate traditional ethnic music with modern
synthesizers resulting in a sound that is both unique and addictive |
|
|
|
How
did Deep Forest start? |
|
| |
|
The
project came about when Sanchez, an avid student of ethnic music,
decided to try to combine African voices in a modern pop context.
Sanchez, who was friends with Mouquet already then for several years,
gave him a listen. The idea interested Mouquet a lot and the two
began making music. Mouquet, who had previously composed and arranged
mainly music with synthesizers, gave the music its ambient dance
sound. |
|
|
|
How
did Eric and Michel start out playing music? |
|
| |
|
While
Mouquet had "learned music by himself", Sanchez was trained
classically in the accordion, piano and classical organ. He attended
the Conservatory of Paris for three years before "a very big
lack of money" forced him to leave and take on "a lot
of different jobs in music". |
|
|
|
When
did Deep Forest Debut? |
|
| |
|
Initially,
"Deep Forest" was released internationally by Columbia on June 3,
1992. Epic picked it up and released it in May 1993 in the U.S.
before handing the project over to 550 Music in August. |
|
|
|
Why
is the group called Deep Forest? |
|
| |
|
It
is believed that since the first Deep Forest album was supposed
to be a project in honor of Earth Day, the name Deep Forest highlights
the mission to save the tropical rainforests around the world.
The music also features vocals from cultures that live in the rainforest. |

Who
is Dan Lacksman? |
|
|

|
|
Dan
Lacksman
|
|
|
Dan
Lacksman produced/engineered Deep Forest's debut album. After spending
some time mixing a few songs Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez took
their demo tapes to Lacksman's studio where the songs were entirely
reworked.
"It was the vocals and the
emotion of the songs which attracted me," he says. After
the first album, there was a disagreement on what direction Deep
Forest should take. He explained, "I wanted to get even more
into the studio side of things. The others wanted to make Deep
Forest a 'live' thing. I feel this kind of music stands on its
own for what it is, exploring these great sounds. I consider the
studio my musical instrument."
|
|
| |
|
Dan
Lacksman contributed a great deal to the sound of the debut Deep
Forest album. This he spent over a year producing, partly due to
the fact there were no time pressures. After Deep Forest, Dan Lacksman
and Cooky Cue (the other engineer from the first Deep Forest album)
created their own group by the name of Pangea. Pangea is very much
studio based and has a lot of similarities to the first Deep Forest
album. Dan Lacksman continued throughout the 1990's producing dozens
of albums including Michel Sanchez' solo album, Windows, The Circle
of Life with vocals from Difang (male vocals from Enigma's song
Return to Innocence) and The Long Forgotten Future album from Aereda.
Pangea, Circle of Life, and Long forgotten Future were all engineered
by Lacksman and are rich mixes of layered synthesizers and ethnic
sounds.

“That's, of course, an unforgettable experience, at least
for me personally, as I've always deeply respected Peter Gabriel.
It was an encounter with an idol. I was extremely nervous because
I thought he either wouldn't know the music of Deep Forest at all
and would look down upon us as some funny beginners, who he has
to waste his talents with, or, in the better case, he would know
our music, but wouldn't like it at all. At the end it turned out

French violinist Catherine Lara has been making music for nearly
three decades. She began he career as an instrumental violinist,
then shifting into the pop-rock genre in the mid 70's, and continued
to fuse her vocals with the violin in a number of musical styles.

80's, and then in 1999 she began her musical relationship with Eric
Mouquet
Their first song which was composed by Sanchez and Mouquet was 'L'Enfant
Fleur' featuring vocals by Cheb Mami and Catherine Lara playing
violin. The song was released on the fourth volume of Sol En Si,
which is also a French charity organization that helps families
who have HIV.
At the same time Eric and Catherine Lara were working on their own
project which was released later that same year under the name Aral
(contained the track "Deep Lara". After the completion
of Aral, Eric began working on the album Thorgal which is a soundtrack
to the popular French comic book Thorgal. Having just worked on
Aral with Catherine, Eric was able to get Catherine to perform two
songs for Thorgal, which was released in mid-2000. |

Monika and Lala are two sisters who along
with their three brothers make up the Madagascan group Njava. The
group was founded at the end of the 80s, after Madagascar freed
itself from the tyrannical military rule, ending nearly two decades
of isolation. The band sings about exile, daily struggles and the
environment. It also performs music based on indigenous rituals
and ceremonies.
As well as singing on Comparsa, Monika and Lala were very important
in Deep Forest's 98' world tour, performing the vocals for many
of the songs. |

Dozzy is one of the three brothers in Njava, performing guitar and
vocals. The three sisters and two brothers are from the Antemoro
tribe in the southeast of the Madagascan island. The group moved
to Europe some years ago and thought they would have to become an
electronic pop band, but to their surprise people wanted to hear
more from their tradition. The music has influences of the Hindu,
Polynesian and South African cultures that inform the culture of
Madagascar. The music also shows signs of an urban twist influenced
by their living in Europe all these years. |

just to link the song with it at the beginning of the show. So I
was very impressed and at the end I said we should go back stage
to say "Hello" and "Thank you for doing that, it was very nice of
you". He saw us and said: `Wow! It's Deep Forest. How are you? And
then he said something very strange, he said "You know you inspired
me for my last album “My People", and we said "No Joe, it's just
the opposite. You've inspired us for a long time!" (laughs)“. '
So we asked Joe to participate on a song for our new record. He
agreed to do that. We sent the demo to Joe, and he sent it back

mixed with elements of pop has earned him a top position among mainstream

for some time and loving the rhythms of Deep Forest, he sought out
Eric Mouquet, of Deep Forest, for his creative input
”I realized early on the benefit of finding the right creative
chemistry, which is why Eric [Mouquet] was also such a natural choice.”-----
”I'm a huge admirer of what they've done with artists like Peter

a whole new direction.”
In addition to Never Let Go, their collaboration also resulted
in a second song, Remember When it Rained, which was only

Are
there any videos or DVDs of Deep Forest? |
|
| |
|
There
are no commercially available videos or DVDs of Deep Forest, except
for one DVD released only in Japan, called 'Image Live +'. This
DVD is a video taping of the Image concerts in Japan, May 2001.
The DVD allows the viewer to choose from seven different camera
angles for each of the songs. Although Deep Forest performed Sweet
Lullaby and Freedom Cry, as well as being involved in performing
with some of the other musicians at the concerts, only Freedom Cry
appears on the DVD.
Other Deep Forest videos include a
promotional video accompanying the release of Comparsa, which included
clips of different Deep Forest music videos, and an interview with
Michel Sanchez and Eric Mouquet. There are also some bootleg videos
of Deep Forest performing live in Japan during there world tour.
Lastly Deep Forest has also released a number of music videos. |

What
Deep Forest music videos exist? |
|
| |
|
Deep Forest has a number of music
videos. Several of them recycle footage such as the Marta's Song
videos, which are all variations of the same video. The list is
as follows:
« Deep
Forest (2 versions)
Directed
by Kevin Godley
« Boheme
Directed
by Didier Kerbrat
« Bohemian Ballet
"I
wasn't really thrilled with the Indian music scenario, so I decided
to appraoch bands that play my kind of music - Deep Forest. More
than a month later, my crew began filming at the ancient city
- Hampi for their latest assignment. The video was a series of
stylised images. Both the band and my crew enjoyed the experience
and more ideas are on the drawing board for their next collaboration."
(Sunil Raina, director of video)
« Madazulu
Directed
by Tim Macmillan. Filmed on location in Mexico with 'Josephine'
and super-16. The Mexican boy illustrates the 'second coming.'
The film features people from a small village on the East coast
of Mexico the intent being to involve a local community
in the project and to ensure that the local community also benifits
directly from the commission.
The film involved much layering, matteing and rotascoping to
interweave time shifts within the story.
« Marta's Song
Directed
by Howard Greenhalgh
« Marta's
Song (Armand's Muslim Moose Mix)
« Marta's
Song (Rainforest Crunch Mix)
« Media Luna
« Noonday Sun
« Pacifique
« Savana Dance
« Sweet Lullaby
(2 versions)
Upon
hearing the tune, Tarsem says he was temporarily lured away from
the lucrative commercial industry by the pure, young voice of
a Pygmy girl singing a cappella at the close of the track. "I
wanted to do the video just so I could use the girl singing this
one line," he says. "It's just so brilliant." (Tarsem
Singh, director of video)
Original version Directed by David Lodge
« Sweet Lullaby
(Around The World Mix)
« White
Whisper
Uses the
same video as Sweet Lullaby, directed by Tarsem Singh.

Does
Deep Forest give anything back to the cultures it samples from? |
|
| |
|
A
percentage of proceeds from Deep Forest's debut album sales went
to the Pygmy Fund, set up to aid Zaire's pygmies in the transition
from nomadic to agrarian subsistence, and to provide appropriate
health care in their struggle for survival.
A portion of the proceeds
from 'Boheme' go to the Gyoörgy Martin Foundation, which aids
in protecting the Romany (Gypsy) culture of Hungary.
Deep Forest also actively supports
the Sana Madagascar Association starting with 'Comparsa'. "The
aim of the Sana Madagascar Association is to contribute protecting
the environment, to collect instruments and precious recordings
in order to allow the Malgasy man to save his culture, his nature
and his traditional music." |

What

February 28, 1996 for Boheme. It was awarded the best album in the
World Music category. They also won the 1996 World Music Award for
the French group having the most sales in the world in 1995.

Why
do we hear so little from Deep Forest? |
|
| |
|
Sanchez:
"The sound is what is important here, not the personalities
involved," he says. "I'm certainly not interested in being
a pop star that's a very fragile thing. Being a composer is enduring." |
