Eric Mouquet did not spend a long time choosing between music and
astronomy. He did both.
The idea of his new project was born while
looking up at the sky: an album based on space. Musician during the
day, Eric becomes an astronomer at night. His music will make you
meet aliens!
What gave you the idea of looking at the stars ?
From my childhood i have wonderful memories of the starry sky, which
gave me the desire to observe what was happening up there. Thus,
I started using telescopes. Astronomy has become a real passion that
still fills me with as much enthusiasm today as when I was a child.
Your first memory?
My first observation of Saturn. I saw that little sphere surrounded
by rings. This magic observation, so far and so close at the same
time, gave me the desire to explore the sky with bigger instruments.
What are your expectations of astronomy?
When I take a picture of galaxies that are 15 million light years
or more away, I have this kind of fascination and i say to myself
that we actually are nothing in that universe.
When we have our mind in the sky what kind of music do we have in
our head?
The practice of astronomy
has influence on our everyday life and consequently on my music too.
What I’m
looking for may somehow be close to spirituality. I try to integrate
feelings that belong to the world I live in.
How was the Deep Forest project born?
This
project was initiated in 1991, with Michel Sanchez who is musician
too. For 10 years we have been composing music with voices and
sound atmospheres from all over the world. We mixed them in our
studios. That’s what we call ethnic
music.
There was Deep Forest, now will it be Deep Space?
Yes this is currently the project i am working on. The idea is to
add music to the pictures i made. I wanted to find an atmosphere
that was not a caricature of what we imagine when we generally speak
about music for space.
What kind of instruments do you use?
I mix traditional sounds and instruments that will produce some
atmosphere. This atmosphere shall evoke distances, feelings, while
simple instruments like flutes, piano or percussions will bring us
back to our world.
Can you tell us more about the music you composed for cosmostreet?
This music may be the main theme of my next album. It will mix organic
stuff, voices, rhythms in loop, more or less like a kaleidoscope
where we see shapes changing and where movements are never the same.
