Deep Forest in Chat

Would you like to live on an island?

Sure, just so long as it's 800km by 600km!
(this is a joke, since that's the size of France itself)

Does your new album tend more towards being electronic music or world music?

It's kind of like a soundtrack. It's sound is very electronic, but at the same time we got Maori (Polynesian) chants going on at the same time.

The symbol on the cover of Deep Forest looks a lot like the Berber Cross, which is on the flag of Kabyle. Is this intended?

It's actually an ancient Chinese symbol which means "tree." When we put a circle around it, we intended it to convey "Forest."

Are you influence by Buddhism?

No

Is there a story behind the name of your group?

It's originally the title of a song on our first album. It was supposed to reflect the ambience of a tropical forest . . . like where Pygmies live.

Are you thinging about doing a concert in France, say in Genoble?

It depends if we do any concerts next year after the next album, we will definitely BE in france though . . .

I'm a fan of sampling, and I was wondering what material you use to sample?

We use the S3002 and Pro Tools 24 mix +.

What did you do while you were gone?
We worked on some personal projects.
Eric : I cut an album with CL, it's called "Aral." I also did an album based on the BD "Thorgal"
Michel : I made my own album called "Hyroglyphics".

What's your best memory of a concert?

It was two years ago in Japan. The entire room sung "Sweet Lullabay" with us.

Were you influenced by Led Zeppelin?

We did listen a lot to Led Zeppelin, when we were kids. We were fans of all of their albums. Basically Kashmir had a great sound that pleased us a lot at the time.

Do you think that maybe you denatured tradional chant music by mixing it with electronic music?

Nope :-)

Do you know Frank Zappa, and were you influenced by his work?

We love the guy, and we are fans of everything he does.

Did you compose the BO of the film (Prince of the Pacific) or did you wait to see it first to create a sound that would flow with the film?

We already knew the basics, then we directly composed the music on top of the images.

What do you think about music exchanges like Napster?

It's important for artists to be able to preserve the rights to their music, because it's the only income they have. The right must not be spoiled.

Don't you think that Napster helps artists become better known, because their music can be more widely distributed?

It's good to be on the net, but why can't the people who make music for the public get paid for it?

Did you like your duo with Enigma?

We never did one with Enigma.

Why is your music and lyrics Ecolo?

What's ecolo music?

Have you ever gotten orders on how to compose a score for any film?

We spoke a lot with Alain Corneau (Prince of the Pacific director) about the scenes in his film which will have music. Finally, he gave us complete control over what to compose.

Do you like to travel and go meet the different ethnic groups whose music you like?

We travel more and more to meet artists with whom we are interested in recording.

Are the voices that you use for samples taken from different discs, or are they the product of your own creation?

We make a lot of our samples ourselves, but sometimes we use samples from discs that we own the rights to.

Have you ever composed anything with Vietnamese artists? If not why?

As of now, we've never recorded any Vietnamese music, but we're thinking about it seriously.

Do the ethnic groups you use profit from the finished product?

For every album, we give money to different associations, who in turn hand out royalties. For examples we gave to the "Pygnee Fund" for the first album, and to the "Gyorji Martin Fountation" for the "Boheme album" and to another organization called "Sana Madagascar" for our album "Comparsa."

Who generally tunes you on tour?

Andy Scott.

Are you two single?

Eric is single, and Michel sort of is :o))

Why don't you live in France?

For the moment the money is in the US, and we have done a lot of tours there!
(This question is confusing, because Eric and Michel do live in France, and to this date have never actually toured in the US)

One day will you do an online concert?

Sure, why not!

I love what you do. But why are you so reclusive, and never on TV?

Go write the television networks . ..

Do you use Macs or PCs?

Both :o)

Technical question, do you manage your waves in Cubase or Cakewalk?

Logic Audio Platinium.

What is the next collaboration expected after Lara Wes Gabriel? (referring to Catherine Lara, Wes Madiko, and Peter Gabriel)

We're gonna invite some Indian and Japanese artists to work with us next.

Why are you called "young" artists?

If you listen to our music . . .

At what age did you begin playing music?

Michel at 4, Eric at 13.

We haven't heard you say much about Michel's album.

That album is just too complex.

Where is your music most popular?

The US, Japan, and Australia.

Just because this interview is almost done, what's your final word?

We're happy to tell you: The Net is great :o)
